A Little Windrose Information
What is a Windrose?
You might have seen the windrose pattern in a quilt but the history is long. Before the compass rose (the compass itself only became known to the west during the 13th century), maps included what was called a windrose to help orient the reader. North is traditionally indicated with a "fleur de lis" symbol, while East (with its religious significance as the direction of Jerusalem) is often marked with a Maltese cross.
In the classical world, no distinction was made between directions and the winds emanating from them. Wind names were not standardized (not every region in the classical world experienced the same wind coming from the same geographical direction), and may vary by the literary source (naming is relatively more standardized for the cardinal directions).
Our Sailor's Valentine, Windrose is crafted of non-endangered shells in a solid mahogany frame with a glass face for protection. Each one comes with a decorative brass hanger. A beautiful addition to your home, or as a gift for that special person in your life!
