Nautical Notecards
Send those good feelings to friends and family. By renowned watercolor artist Glenn C. Matthews from Victoria, British Columbia.
This card "Western Sea" is an historical record of a once-proud fishing boat. During a storm, it was lost with all hands.
Jobs in commercial fishing have consistently ranked among the most deadly. In 19th century Gloucester, Massachusetts, for example, the town each year lost about 200 fishermen, or about 4 percent of it's population to the sea. Although fishing, like almost all other occupations, is considerably safer than in the past, it is still the single most deadly occupation according to statistics.
If it is such a dangerous way of making a living, why then do people do it? Well, for some, it's all they know. For other's, it's all about the money. For still other's, it's an indefinable, intangible thing that some might call the "romance of the sea". In most cases, like the crew of the Western Sea, a fisherman or fisherwoman simply cannot imagine a life working on shore in an office. That would be a slow kind of death.
Each card is an accurate representation of a Glenn Matthews original painting. These prints are individually signed by the artist. Highly suitable for framing.
