Gianni's artistic passions were not confined to fashion design alone. He designed costumes for operas and ballets. He created Elton John's Captain Fantastic and all of the personalities' costumes for the artist formerly known as Prince. He had a substantial art collection that included paintings and drawings by Picasso and paintings by Leger and Basquiat.
A couple of years before his death, the designer battled with a rare cancer of the inner ear. He was presumed to be in remission and was enjoying a fresh new life. He had the lifestyle of the rich and famous, yet he was not a "party until dawn" type of star. He valued what most people value, friends and family. He remembered the names of friends' children and parents. He treasured his brother, sister and her two children leaving them all of his worldly goods.
