Steamship Funnel Waste Basket, RL001

Steamship Funnel Waste Basket

We won't see the likes of them ever again. Floating palaces, huge contraptions of steel and teak wood, smokestacks big enough to park a truck. Glittering ballrooms, luxury Ritz restaurants, smoky lounges and bars. Cocktails and happy hour, Dom Perignon and Veuve Clicquot. Walking by the moonlight on A-Deck, holding hands, looking out over a silvery sea. Running like clockwork, from South Hampton to New York, Hamburg to Boston, Le Havre to Rio. For the fortunate, a passage through Panama and on to Hawaii and Hong Kong.

The smoke stack pail is adorned with real rivets to bring back the old character of the originals. Steamship smoke stack wastebasket in the livery colors of the Cunard Line. A joy to throw stuff in, it's slanted shape invites for a ball aiming contest!

Hand made in metal, measuring 13.75" long, 9.85" wide,  and 13" high.

A Little Steamship Funnel Waste Basket Information

Our Steamship Funnel Waste Basket is in the colors of the Cunard Line.

Cunard was originally founded as the British & North American Steam-Packet Company by Mr. Samuel Cunard of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The name of the new company was eventually shortened to simply the "Cunard Line". Mr. Cunard had won a contract from the British Government for trans-Atlantic mail service, and this allowed him to construct his first ship, the Britannia.

It was on Independence Day, 1840, that the steamship Britannia sailed her maiden voyage from Liverpool, England to Boston via Halifax. Cunard's competitors were experiencing one disaster after another, so Samuel Cunard decided that the number one priority was the safety of his passengers. Basic instructions to the Masters of all Cunard steamships in those days were to use their common sense to deliver the ship to its destination without incident. The concept worked well. While the competition was foundering - in some cases quite literally - the Cunard Line was building a reputation for safety and reliability. It was on this reputation that the Cunard Line made its first successes.

As more and more Cunard vessels began plying the waves of the North Atlantic, more and more passengers began to choose the Cunard Line. It became very obvious very quickly that the newly founded shipping line was going to be a strong competitor over the coming years.
