Sailboats

Model Sailboats as Nautical Decor

Bermuda Sloop
We've been interested in sailboats since we were young.  They have played a big part in our lives.  The dreams of long distance sailing are a long distance away now but they never go away.  I remember someone said that the most difficult part of going offshore sailing is getting there.  Many have come close, me included, but few succeed in actually getting there.  The demands of life and career can wreak havoc on those youthful dreams.  But that doesn't mean that you can't still have a strong connection to those graceful lines, sweet curves and towering masts.

Take a bit of time and browse through the beautiful models of sailboats that we have for you to look at.  From small to large, they will all make your heart come gladly as they say.  These model boats are all beautifully detailed and hand crafted by artisans who take great pride in their work.

A Little Sailboat Story...

I remember back when I had my Hunter 27.  It's one of the really nice sailboats I've owned. I was anchored in a bay near Saltspring Island.  A quiet bay, no other boats and not a light in sight except for a channel marker far off in the distance.  Pitch black night.  Clear skies.  Wall to wall stars.  It was warm even at midnight, after a scorching hot day.  I had moved my mattress out into the cockpit and was just lazing the night away not really caring if I went to sleep or not.  The show up in the heavens was really too good to miss and Lord knows we get to see the show so seldom, so it was worth staying up for.  I could hear some splashing in the distance as some sea creature went about his nightly work.  A late night nautical snack.

All of a sudden, across the sky in my peripheral vision I saw a streaking bright light.  As I was turning my head, I managed to follow this bright light all the way across the sky from left to right.  A blazing light that seemed to burn into my retina.  It moved fast, real fast until it reached the southern horizon and disappeared.  The whole event took only a second or two but it was breathtaking and left my heart pounding.  This wasn't just your garden variety shooting star.  This was a huge piece of the heavens falling down.  This was like a piece of space junk had re-entered earth's atmosphere and had gone down all the way to the ground.  I fully expected to hear a bang or explosion as it went below my horizon.  I stood breathless in the cockpit under the stars in the middle of a quiet bay.  My world which had been immediate had suddenly expanded and had become a part of the heavens.

Wow.  That was all I could say.  There wasn't anyone else on board, so I couldn't exclaim to them or share this awesome experience.  Just me to talk to.  I couldn't find words to express the magnitude of what I had seen, so I just shut up and let the whole experience soak in.  I think it was right about then that I decided that I wanted to share my life with someone special.  I wanted to have someone special near me for all the other breathtaking experiences that life was going to send my way.

The upshot of this story?  Well, sailing is one way of seeing things you might never see anywhere else.  Of course I might have seen this same space spectacle on land, but I don't think it would have had the same effect.  Of course, I'm prejudiced because I'm hooked on sailing and sailboats.

Oh, and by the way, I have a model sailboat on my computer desk where I am writing this.  It's a beauty, one of the many sailboats you can see on this website.  Often when I am working, I will look at this boat model and remember all the times I was out sailing.  I get taken away.  That's what nautical decor is all about.
