I remember one night rowing back to my boat which was anchored out in the bay. It was late and there wasn't any moon, but the stars were so bright, I could easily see all around the bay. The other boats were all quiet. The water was as still as it could be. The only sound was the creaking of my oars in the oarlocks and the slight gurgling of the water around the hull of the boat. It felt like the most peaceful place on earth and rather than return to my boat, I just kept on rowing.
My rowboat seemed to just glide through the water with minimal effort and before long, I had rowed out of the bay and was in the strait between the islands. I could see so clearly with stars from horizon to horizon. I rested my oars and at that moment a killer whale slowly came to the surface not more than 50 feet away. As he surfaced, he exhaled and the spray from his blowhole drifted slowly across the water. The whale must have spotted my small rowboat and he slowly swam my way. For some reason, I didn't feel particularly vulnerable, there was such a peaceful feeling all around. The whale cruised slowly and silently by and as his head came near, he seemed to be looking right at me. I did nothing. What could I do? He paused for a moment and we were the only two beings in the universe. The stars, the ocean, the whale and me. The big creature slowly turned and sank into the depths leaving me wondering where he was going and what it was like in his world.
Sorry if you were expecting a big finish to this story. There isn't one. Just that if you ever get a chance to row on a starlit night, take the opportunity. Who knows what you might experience.
