A Little Nautical Notecard Information

About the artist:

Glenn C. Matthews was born in the seafaring town of Victoria, British Columbia. He began his career in the early '70s painting in oil and watercolor by telling visual stories of ships and the sea. Numerous trips to Hawaii established him as a member of the Lahaina Art Society and from there his paintings fanned out all over the world.

After some years, Glenn extended his choice of subject matter but has always concentrated on careful drawing, close attention to values (the contrasting lights and darks) and a bold approach to color.

As well as these beautiful Nautical Notecards, some of Glenn's original watercolors are also available. Details can be obtained through Nautical Decor...and more!

Nautical Notecards

Send those good feelings to friends and family.  By renowned watercolor artist Glenn C. Matthews from Victoria, British Columbia.

This card "Nootka Sound" is about a place and time.  The first Europeans to have sustained contact with B.C.'s coastal native people were Captain James Cook and crew on the H.M.S. Resolution and H.M.S. Discovery. They anchored in Resolution Cove, Nootka Sound on March 31, 1778.  At Yuquot, the tip of Nootka Island, Cook and crew met Chief Maquinna, the most influential leader of the Nootka people of Vancouver Island's west coast. These were great whale hunters, pursuing whales far out to sea in whaling canoes. While Cook was at Resolution Cove, a group of Mowachahts apparently called out to his ship: "itchme nutka, itchmenutka", meaning "go around" (to Yuquot). Cook thought they were telling him that Nootka was the name of the area. Cook claimed the territory for Britain, but did not start a permanent settlement there.

Each card is an accurate representation of a Glenn Matthews original painting. These prints are individually signed by the artist. Highly suitable for framing.
