Mermaid, TM029

Mermaid

Those playful ladies of the sea. In
ancient sailor's lore mermaids were
reputed to sing so beguilingly that
they lured many a spellbound sailor
into the deeps. Although the sea was the mermaids natural element, this posed a problem to the average sailor since most of them didn't master the art of
swimming. Our charming mermaid
mounts her dolphin steed rather than
luring sailors.

Crafted of metal and hand painted with a distressed finish. Each one comes with a numbered metal tag confirming that these are made in limited numbers. Start a collection of nautical Balance Toys. Use the wallmounts or floorstands to create an interesting nautical decor look in any room.

A Little Mermaid Information

Excerpt: Act 2 Scene 1 from A Midsummer Night's Dream
by William Shakespeare

OBERON
My gentle Puck, come hither: thou remember'st Since once I sat upon a promontory, And heard a mermaid, on a dolphin's back, Uttering such dulcet and harmonious breath, That the rude sea grew civil at her song, And certain stars shot madly from their spheres To hear the sea-maid's music.

PUCK
I remember.

Mermaids live primarily beneath the sea. They are the guardians and avengers of women. They can predict storms and future events and some can even grant wishes. They are great teachers of wisdom and knowledge.

The British Isles had their fair share of merfolk mythology. The Cornish knew them as Merrymaids; the Irish knew them as Merrows or Muirruhgach and some sources write that they lived on dry land below the sea and had enchanted caps that allowed them to pass through the water without drowning, while the women were very beautiful the men had red noses, were piggy eyed, with green hair and teeth and a penchant for brandy.

In the Shetlands the mermaid is known as the Sea-trow who are able to take off their animal skin that allows them to swim through the water like a fish, and then walk on land like humans.

As for our Merrymaid balance toy, it is completely hand made from recycled metal, hand forged and painted. Each piece is hand waxed in the final stage to give it that warm and subtle shine. Colorful and whimsical nautical decor. A beautiful addition to your home, or as a gift!
