A Little Madeira Information
One of the island's three principal fishing villages, Camara de Lobos lies on the most crowded flank of the island and has a reputation of having more than it's fair share of hooligans. On this island, houses are virtually stacked one on top of another. When you live like that, you get a little sensitive. In Camara de Lobos, the worst insult you can give someone is to say they are messy! Messy? Yes, a messy person is someone who doesn't sweep up, who leaves trash lying around. Someone who doesn't respect his neighbors. So, from time to time, with a little of the famous local wine, a careless comment to the tune of "what a messy fellow" and...things happen.
Little islands are like large prisons. One cannot look at the sea without wishing for the wings of the swallow. However, today many Madeirans are coming back to stay on the islands. It is hard not to miss the sounds and smells of the ocean. Our little boat is a typical fishing vessel, not unlike one from around these parts. The sail is a little different and the bold colors are typically Madeiran.
