Boat Model: Lobster Boat

Lobster Boat

Catch of the Day. A ubiquitous presence in charming North East fishing ports. Filled with lobster traps, ready to take off for the Atlantic for the new catch of the day. Nothing beats lobster, and nothing would beat spending a day away from the city, working on this sturdy fishing vessel.
Fully assembled.
A Little Lobster Boat Information

Lobster Boat fishing in New England is traditionally done from June through the New Year. It's generally too harsh to fish in the winter, when lines, decks, and tackles get coated with ice. The common American lobster, Homarus americanus, inhabits Atlantic coastal waters from Labrador to North Carolina but is especially prevalent along the New England coast. Believe it or not, until the end of the 19th century, lobster was so plentiful that it was commonly used for fish bait.

Lobster Boat fishermen, start the process of getting those luscious lobsters by setting out traps, or Lobster Pots which are baited with herring. After a time, the Lobsterman will go back out and start checking and collecting the pots. He leans overboard with a grappling hook and snags a colored float that identifies one of his lobster pots, tosses the float aside, hooks the line onto a power winch, and pulls a footlocker-sized, rubber-coated wire trap up from the bottom. The pot has an escape hatch through which small lobsters can escape.

All lobstermen carry a gauge for determining the size of a lobster. The gauge is hooked onto the back end of the crustacean's head section and extended from there to the eyeball. The distance must measure at least three and one-quarter inches or the lobster can't legally be taken.

There's an old joke that shows how poorly their work pays.

"Did you hear about the lobsterman who won a million dollars in the lottery? People asked him what he was going to do with all that money. The lobsterman said, `Just keep lobstering till the million runs out, I guess."
