A Little Runabout Lago Di Como Information
- Runabout Lago Di Como Special, 1962 -
The Runabout Lago Di Como has been called the "Rolls-Royce of the Sea', the "Stradivarius of Boating" and one look at the rich finish and unbelievable detail and quality make you quickly understand just why.
In 1962, Carlo Riva introduced the Aquarama series of fast runabouts. This powerful bi-motor has so much charm and elegance that she is compared with Rolls-Royce and Ferrari.
The Jet-Set quickly made the boat Europe's status symbol. The boat could entertain eight persons at a 45 mp/h speed, in total style and elegance. Power options were a pair of 185-hp Chris-Craft engines or 220-hp Riva V8s. In 1966, the Super version was introduced that was 27.5 feet long. The extra length was necessary due to the larger fuel tanks for the new 320 horse power engines. This baby could do around 55 mp/h.
The architect Giorgio Barilaini , re-designed the stern section of the boat creating easy access to the swimming ladder . This new version was named the Aquarama Special. 767 units of this graceful mahogany powerboat were built.
Unlike some of my investments, if I had been smart enough to buy one in 1963, it would have cost $ 17,800. When the last Aquarama Special rolled out in 1996 the price was $387,000. Not a bad return on investment! And it would have been a fun investment also! Riva of Italy - which traces its beginnings to a mid-19th century carpenter shop is a world leader in producing elegant, luxury wooden runabouts.
