Standing on the aft deck, swaying with the rolling and pitching of the ship, peering through a driving rain, wind howling through the rigging. In classic oil coat and cap, heavy boots, stoic, always on course. That's the helmsman, staying his course, dependable and fun.

A Little Helmsman Information

Simon Basil Harwar. Neptune's Car. On clear nights, with the stars across the sky, Harwar would turn his back to the helm and steer the Car by the stars and the feel of the ship riding the waves. If you're a sailing buff, or simply enjoy a good rollicking tale of the sea, you can't do much better than "Voyage" by Sterling Hayden. Harwar was the consummate helmsman with a feel for the ship that few could match. His ability to handle the ship made his shipmates feel like they were all in good hands. And when you are on a big, fast square rigger going around the Horn, you needed to feel like you were in good hands. It was a long and dangerous trip.

As for our Helmsman balance toy, it is completely hand made from recycled metal, hand forged and painted. Each piece is hand waxed in the final stage to give it that warm and subtle shine. Colorful and whimsical nautical decor. A beautiful addition to your home, or as a gift!
