Flower, SF101

Sailor's Valentine, Flower

Typically framed in octagonal mahogany frames, many of the 19th century original shell frames have survived and are now recognized as true expressions of folk art. No book about Nautical Antiques, no Marine Auction at Christie's or Sotheby's is complete without reference to original shell frames. Antique Sailor's Valentines are selling for prices between eight and eighteen thousand dollars. The original artists often incorporated a sentimental message of love for the sailor's sweetheart at home. Flower patterns, hearts and windroses were popular designs used in the compositions. For this reason they became known over time as Sailor's Valentines.

Crafted of non-endangered shells in a solid mahogany frame. Each one comes with a decorative brass hanger. Start a collection of Sailor's Valentines to create an interesting nautical decor look in any room. Give one to your own special Valentine!

A Little Flower Information

These beautiful shell frames are also known as Sailor's Valentines. Valentine's Day has been around for a long, long time and as we all know has everything to do with love and romance. But just who was Valentine? One story says Valentine was an early Christian who made friends with many children. The Romans imprisoned him because he refused to worship their gods. The children missed Valentine and tossed loving notes between the bars of his cell window. This tale may explain why people exchange messages on Valentine's Day.

One of the oldest Valentine's customs was the practice of writing women's names on slips of paper and drawing them from a jar. The woman whose name was drawn by a man became his valentine, and he paid special attention to her. Many men gave gifts to their valentines. In some areas, a young man gave his valentine a pair of gloves. Wealthy men gave fancy balls to honor their valentines. You could start a custom of your own and give a different Sailor's Valentine each February 14th. Start with the Flower version. I'm thinking that you would be well rewarded for your thoughtfullness!

Our Sailor's Valentine, Flower is crafted of non-endangered shells in a solid mahogany frame with a glass face for protection. Each one comes with a decorative brass hanger. A beautiful addition to your home, or as a gift for that special person in your life!
