A Little Yarmouth Cutter Information
Yarmouth was a major shipbuilding and manufacturing center in the 19th century. In the early 20th century it's focus moved to small scale fishing and lobstering.
In shallow coastal bays and inlets, flat-bottomed sailing skiffs were used to set out lobster traps and fishing nets. During the 1930's a regulation was passed stating that lobster pots in certain bays could only be harvested from rowing or sailing boats, but that outboard motors could be used to cross rough water to get to the bays.
Subsequently, these boats were designed to attain planing speed at 20 mph under outboard power but still retain good rowing and sailing ability. The aggressive dory bow slices through chop and the flat bottom lifts the boat onto a plane. When the weight of the motor is removed from the transom, the rounded shape ships easily through the water.
