A Little Cape Horn Information
The Cape Horn, is one example of hundreds of beautiful, fast yachts designed by William Fife III (1857-1944). Fife was born into the boat building and design trade, in his father's and grandfather's shipyard in Fairlie, North Ayrshire, Scotland. By the age of 30, he became known as the premier designer of classic wooden yachts and noted racing boats for Royalty and the wealthy.
Fife is noted as one of the best yacht designers in history and the Cape Horn is just one of the many yachts designed by his hand. If you are a history buff, or interested in seeing some history of Fife and his work, there are a great many articles on display at the Largs Historical Society Museum on Manse Court, just off Main Road near the George Hotel in Largs, Scotland. Their telephone number is 01475 687081 should you wish to contact them before visiting.
Largs, where Fife is buried, is situated on the West Coast of Scotland, 30 miles South West of Glasgow. It is a small tourist town with a population of 20,000. A Ferry Service runs from Largs to Isle of Cumbrae.
If you are interested in seeing photos of Fife's masterpieces, I would recommend a visit to the following website: Fairlie Restorations. Fairlie Restorations was set up by an established classic yacht owner with a passionate interest in the yachts designed by William Fife Jr.
